About the Filmmakers...

Cynthia Wade, Director
Cynthia Wade directed and shot the five-time award-winning HBO documentary "Shelter Dogs", which was broadcast in seven countries. She directed and edited the award-winning 1999 Cinemax documentary "Grist For The Mill", which was called "a jewel... extremely comical" (Variety) and "excellent... a delight" (The Hollywood Reporter). Wade was co-producer/cinematographer for the 1998 PBS documentary "Taken In: The Lives of America's Foster Children", which won a prestigious duPont Columbia Award for Excellence in Journalism. Wade has been Director of Photography for PBS, HBO/Cinemax, A&E, Discovery, The History Channel, MTV, AMC, Oxygen, and TNT. She has made dozens of films for corporate and nonprofit clients, including Intel, the National Guard, and Job Corps. She teaches advanced cinematography at the New School. She holds a BA cum laude from Smith College and an MA in Documentary Film Production from Stanford University.

Vanessa Roth, Producer
Vanessa Roth produced and directed the 2007 award-winning documentary "The Third Monday in October," and co-produced and co-directed the award-winning 2004 PBS documentary "Aging Out", which is the center of a multi- million-dollar national foster care outreach campaign sponsored by the Annie Casey Foundation. Roth produced and directed the 2002 award-winning film "Close to Home" which premiered at Sundance and aired as a prime-time special on the Discovery Health Channel. Her 1998 PBS film "Taken In: The Lives of America's Foster Children" won the coveted duPont Columbia award. Ms. Roth recently produced and directed the A&E special "9/11's Toxic Dust" and is now working with Dave Eggers on a feature documentary about teachers.


Matthew Syrett, Producer
Matthew Syrett has co-produced and marketed three of Wade's films. He is a known strategist and producer specializing in interactive and video media. He has worked as Vice President Grey Interactive and the LinkShare corporation helping some the largest companies in the world market their products. He is a well-regarded author on media strategy, having written articles published by MarketingProfs.com, CRM Today, and Belisaurius.com. Syrett holds a BA from the University of Michigan and an MA in Anthropology from the University of California at Santa Barbara.


David Teague, Editor
David Teague is a filmmaker, film curator, and teacher. His film work includes numerous award-winning documentaries, independent features, and short films. He has written and directed two independent feature films: Love Suicides (2007) and The Sandman (2001) and he was the director of photography for Mariners & Musicians, which premiered at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. He has shot and edited music videos for artists such as David Bowie, Dolly Parton, and Laurie Anderson, and he directed a concert film for the Kronos Quartet. His work has screened at Cannes and the Berlinale. He also runs Flicker NYC, a film festival dedicated to showcasing new Super-8 and 16mm films.


David Mehlman, Supervising Editor
David Mehlman edited and sound designed The Moon and the Son, an animated documentary that won an Academy Award in 2005. He is currently working with Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinfosky, editing a new cinema-verite series about subcultures for The Discovery Channel. He has directed and edited episodes of MTV’s acclaimed True Life series, A&E's The First 48, and his award-winning documentaries have shown on PBS, ABC, Cinemax, at film festivals both internationally and throughout the United States. David received a master's degree in Documentary Film and Video Production from Stanford University.


Robin Honan, Co-Producer
Robin Honan was the Associate Producer of the award-winning 2006 short documentary "Mined to Death," which explores the uneasy relationship between Quechua-speaking miners and foreign tourists in Potosi, Bolivia. Prior to working in commercial and documentary film production, Honan spent six years as a non-profit fundraiser and educator.

Davina Pardo, Associate Producer
Davina Pardo came to Freeheld after receiving an MA from the documentary film production program at Stanford University. She has produced and directed several short films, including Birdlings Two and Yesterday in Rwanda, both of which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festivalin 2004 and 2005 and have since screened at dozens of other festivals and aired on Canadian television.


Rob Schwimmer, Composer
Rob Schwimmer is a composer-pianist and thereminist who has performed and recorded throughout the world. He has worked with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Chaka Khan, Laurie Anderson, Bette Midler, Queen Latifah, Matthew Barney, Ang Lee, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cynthia Wade, Steve Buscemi, Edie Brickell, The Everly Brothers, Kurt Vonnegut, Odetta and Sammy Davis Jr, among many others. Schwimmer is one of the few theremin virtuosos in the world. His compositions have been featured in theater, television series and movies, documentaries and feature films.
